简介
1958年2月，观测船派飞机从南极昭和基地接回第一批探险队员。临行前，盐田等人绑好了15只桦太犬，留给即将赶来接班的第二批队员。不料，由于天气极其恶劣，第二批队员无法飞抵基地，原计划取消，全体队员一起回国。盐田和越智强烈要求收回桦太犬，但最终没能如愿。回国后，盐田摆脱不了内心的愧疚，便辞去了北海道大学讲师的职务，挨家挨户拜访提供桦太犬的人家，道歉。在越智的推动下，稚内市修建了铜像，以纪念这些祭祀犬。与此同时，在南极的冰天雪地中，八只桦树犬挣脱束缚，外出寻找食物，在恶劣的环境中相继死去。一年后，科考队再次来到南极，盐田和越智回到基地，找到了两只幸存的桦树犬……
